About MP4 to WAV conversion

An MP4 is a video container: it holds a picture track and one or more sound tracks, usually AAC audio. Converting MP4 to WAV pulls the sound out and saves it as an uncompressed PCM WAV file that DAWs, audio editors and analysis tools open without fuss. The video itself is left behind.

Sound Booster reads the audio directly from your file in the browser and writes a PCM WAV. For standard AAC audio only the audio samples are read, so the video data is never loaded into memory and large recordings stay manageable. Nothing is uploaded for the core conversion workflow.

Use this when you need the soundtrack of a screen recording, interview, lecture or music video as clean audio. Keep the original MP4 as well: the WAV is a decoded copy of the audio that is already in the video, so it does not add detail, and it takes much more disk space.

How to convert MP4 to WAV

Converting MP4 to WAV on Sound Booster is a short, local process: you add the video, the audio track is extracted in the browser, and you download an uncompressed WAV without installing desktop software. Keep this tab open until progress reaches 100% so the file can finish.

The page is fixed to WAV output, so there is no format list to pick from. You only choose the bit depth and whether to mix down to mono. Most videos with standard AAC audio convert quickly; videos with other audio formats use a compatibility engine that loads on first use and takes a little longer.

01

Add your MP4

Drop an MP4 video on the panel, choose it from disk, or open it from Your Library. The page shows the file size, the length and the audio format it found, and warns you if the video has no audio track.

02

Choose settings and convert

Pick 16-bit, 24-bit or 32-bit float, tick Mono if you want a single channel, then click Convert to WAV. The estimated WAV size is shown before you start, and progress is displayed as a percentage while the audio is extracted.

03

Download or save

Save the WAV to your device, or store it in Your Library so you can open Volume Booster, Equalizer, Trimmer, or other tools without re-uploading the video.

MP4 and WAV formats

What is an MP4 file?

MP4 is an MPEG-4 container that usually carries H.264 or HEVC video together with lossy AAC audio, which is what phones, cameras, screen recorders and most downloads produce. The audio inside is already compressed, so converting it to WAV makes it easy to edit but cannot bring back detail the encoder removed.

What is a WAV file?

WAV is a common uncompressed audio container, usually holding PCM samples. Editors and DAWs open it reliably, and further processing does not add another lossy encode the way repeated AAC or MP3 saves can. The trade-off is a much larger file than the audio track inside the MP4.

What people use it for

Editing the soundtrack in a DAW

Pull the audio out of an MP4 and bring it into Audacity, Reaper, Ableton, or Logic as WAV, so cuts, fades, and effects sit on a clean PCM timeline.

Interviews, lectures and meetings

Turn a recorded video call or lecture into a WAV for transcription, noise cleanup or podcast editing without keeping the heavy video file around.

Music videos and clips

Extract the sound from a music video or performance clip as an uncompressed file for sampling, remixing or analysis.

Save the WAV to Your Library and open Equalizer, Bass Booster, or Trimmer without re-uploading the source video.

Frequently asked questions

Does MP4 to WAV improve audio quality?

No. The WAV is a decoded copy of the audio track that is already inside the MP4, so detail removed when the video was encoded cannot be recovered. WAV is still the better format for editing, because it is uncompressed and every editor opens it. Use it as a working copy when a program expects PCM audio.

Do my files leave this device?

No. The audio is read from your video, decoded and written to WAV locally in the browser. Nothing is uploaded to Sound Booster servers.

Is it free?

Yes on this page, without a mandatory account.

Does it convert the video too?

No. This tool extracts only the sound. The picture is ignored and the result is an audio-only WAV file, so you will not get a video back. If you need a smaller audio file instead, use MP4 to MP3.

How big will the WAV be?

Uncompressed 16-bit stereo audio at 44.1 kHz takes roughly 10 MB per minute, far more than the AAC track inside the MP4. After you add a file the page shows an estimated WAV size, which changes when you pick 24-bit, 32-bit float or mono.

Can I convert large MP4 videos?

Usually yes. For standard AAC audio the page reads only the audio samples and skips the video data, so even multi-gigabyte videos stay light on memory. Files with other audio formats use a compatibility engine that must load the whole file into memory, and that path is limited to about 1.5 GB.

What happens if the video has several audio tracks?

The first audio track is converted, and the page tells you when more than one is present. If you need a different track, export that one from your video editor first.

Which WAV settings can I choose?

You can pick 16-bit PCM (the default and most compatible), 24-bit PCM for production work, or 32-bit float, and you can mix stereo down to mono. The sample rate of the original audio is kept.

Why did conversion fail?

The most common causes are an MP4 with no audio track, an audio format your browser cannot read, or a file too large for the compatibility engine. Try Chrome or Edge, a shorter clip, and keep the tab open until progress reaches 100%.
