What is the Extract Audio from Video tool?

This tool saves the sound of a video as a separate audio file. It is made for the everyday jobs: turning a recorded interview, lecture or webinar into a podcast-style audio file, keeping the music or speech from a clip, grabbing a voice recording that was filmed as video, or preparing a soundtrack for editing.

The main difference from most online converters is the Original quality option. Instead of decoding the sound and compressing it again, the tool lifts the audio track out of the video exactly as it is stored. It is fast, it works on long recordings, and nothing is lost.

How to extract audio from a video

01

Add your video

Drop a file on the panel, choose it from your computer or phone, or open one from Your Library. MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV and AVI are supported.

02

Pick the output

Keep “Original quality” for the best result, or choose MP3 or WAV. If the video has several audio tracks, choose the one you want.

03

Extract and download

Press Extract audio, listen to the result with the player on the page, then download it or save it to Your Library.

Which output should I choose?

  • Original quality — the audio copied as it is, with no conversion. For MP4, MOV and M4V you get an M4A file. Best quality, instant, no length limit. Choose it whenever your player or editor accepts M4A.
  • MP3 (128 to 320 kbps) — plays everywhere, from old car stereos to every phone. Use 320 kbps or 192 kbps for music, and 128 kbps for speech where a small file matters.
  • WAV (16-bit) — uncompressed audio for editors and further processing. The files are large, about 10 MB per minute for stereo.

One thing to know: the sound inside most videos is already compressed (usually AAC). Converting it to MP3 compresses it a second time, so Original quality will always sound at least as good as an MP3 made from the same video.

Formats, limits and what to expect

  • MP4, M4V, MOV — handled directly in the browser. Original quality works for any length and any file size, and you can choose between several audio tracks.
  • MP3 and WAV from MP4 or MOV — the sound is decoded in your browser, so it is limited to about one hour of audio.
  • WebM, MKV, AVI — handled by a video engine that downloads the first time you use it, limited to about 700 MB. Original quality keeps the codec that is inside, for example Opus, OGG, FLAC or MP3.
  • Silent videos — if there is no audio track, the tool says so.

Want the opposite? Use Remove Audio from Video to make a video silent, or MP4 to MP3 for a quick MP3 conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Does extracting the audio reduce its quality?

Not with the “Original quality” option. For MP4, MOV and M4V files it copies the audio exactly as it is stored in the video, with no decoding and no re-encoding, so the result is identical to the soundtrack in the video. Choosing MP3 or WAV converts the audio, which is why Original quality is the default.

Which format should I choose?

Pick Original quality if you want the best result or plan to edit the file later. Pick MP3 if you need a file that plays on every device and app, with 192 or 320 kbps as the usual choices. Pick WAV if you need uncompressed audio for an editor; WAV files are much larger.

What does “Original quality” give me as a file?

For MP4, MOV and M4V it is an M4A file (AAC audio), which plays in iTunes, Apple Music, Android, Windows and most players. For other videos the file type follows the audio inside: for example Opus, OGG, FLAC or MP3.

Can I extract audio from a long video?

Yes for Original quality: there is no length limit for MP4, MOV and M4V, and the video is never loaded into memory as a whole. Converting to MP3 or WAV decodes the sound in your browser, so it is limited to about one hour of audio. WebM, MKV and AVI files are limited to about 700 MB.

My video has several audio tracks. Can I choose one?

Yes for MP4 and MOV. When the tool finds more than one audio track, a track selector appears with the codec, channels, sample rate and language of each one, so you can pick the right language or the commentary track. For other formats the first audio track is used.

Are my videos uploaded to a server?

No. The video is read inside your browser tab, and the audio file is created on your device. Nothing is sent to Sound Booster servers, so private recordings stay private.

How is this different from the MP4 to MP3 converter?

MP4 to MP3 always converts the sound to MP3. This tool works with more video formats, can keep the original audio without any conversion, lets you pick the audio track, and can also save WAV.

Why does the tool say my video has no audio track?

Some screen recordings and exports are silent, for example when the microphone was turned off. If there is no audio inside the file, there is nothing to extract.

Can I remove the vocals or boost the volume afterwards?

Yes. Save the audio to Your Library and open it in the Vocal Remover to get an instrumental, in the Volume Booster to make it louder, or in the Audio Trimmer to cut a part.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes for MP4 and MOV, which includes videos from iPhone and Android. These files use plain browser features, and the Original quality option does not need any heavy processing.
